Thorns make me cringe. Max gave us a great picture in this part of the book that links the fruit of sin with the point of a thorn. Christ became sin on the cross and wore a crown of thorns. It’s unbelievable to witness Christ becoming sin while on the cross, when He prayed to His father and asked Him why He has rejected Him (Matthew 27:46). Before the day He died on the cross Christ was not rejected by His Father.
But today He had to consume all of the prickly areas of life called sin. He became completely like us in this moment to save us from who we have become. Just imagine, the thorns that pierced His flesh were for you. The sins that were dumped on Him were your sins, not His. That is the point of the “crown” He wore that day. He died for the crown that He wants to give you when you meet Him.
