Rob Bell and America’s new Civil War

Freedom. A very strong word that many have died and are dying for.

What do I know about it? I’ve visited southeast Asia twice in the past three years, holding children who are or have been enslaved to human trafficking in my arms. Last month I visited the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati with a group from our church, and last night I finished watching Lincoln (a great film that shares just how hard it was for our government to grant freedom to African Americans). I have moved my family to attend an intentionally multi-ethnic church plant these past two years. There are many other things I have done to educate myself on the different forms of slavery / hatred.

My view of this country is what has shifted the most. Men and women have fought for it, and refugees have fled their country to find it. But WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

There is no such thing as a “Christian” country. That’s a lie that we’ve believed for far too long. Somehow Christians have fallen for the lie that God is more interested in the freedom we are providing, or that He has blessed us because we’ve embraced it more than others have.

It might shock you, but if this country wants one type of freedom it had better be ready to give all of the other types of freedom away as well. That’s where I stand at the moment in my view on the equality of marriage for homosexuals. Is it a sin – I strongly believe it is. Do they deserve the same freedom to choose and the respect from our government – I believe so. Unlike Rob Bell (listen to the 42:40 mark of this recent speech) – I don’t believe that I need to affirm their actions. In this land of freedom, I have a choice to believe what I believe as much as they do. And unlike Rob, I can stand against something without falling for it.

If my faith is as strong as it is, and judging each other is something I want nothing to do with, I will accept their freedom to choose just as much as I will accept the freedom for women to vote and equality throughout the different races in our country.

That to me is the new civil war in this country. Some in the church want to hate, they want to judge. But they don’t realize they are being completely hypocritical. How can we enjoy the freedom of speech or of religion and be at war with homosexuals who want freedom? That’s a situation where I am glad I am not the President! Both righteousness and sin have existed in all countries from the first man and woman until now.

There is another civil war that I believe deserves just as much (I believe MORE) attention than the marriage equality war. Unborn children deserve freedom just as much as I do. For some it is a past that is hard to deal with when it’s a choice that has been made, but we have the chance to change the course of history for these children just like President Lincoln had for African Americans. How is that freedom any less important?

Heaven is our home, not America. During this holy week, remember that Jesus didn’t die for the freedom of this country. He died for the freedom from this world. That is something worth fighting for.

  1. Yeah I totally know what your mean. Christians so get the old and new testament confused. They refuse to look at Jesus as the new covenant and not the covenant that God had with his people before Jesus came. Jesus was criticized for hanging out with sinners. We shouldn’t criticize others for doing the same. Otherwise we fall for the same problems the Pharisee’s and Sadducee’s fell for. They had a strict method for determining who can enter the Holy of Holies. The balked when Jesus picked wheat kernels to eat on the Sabbath! How dare he! He healed on the Sabbath too! AGAIN! How dare he! By judging and bringing done hat eon the sinners we’re guilty of the exact same things THEY WERE when they judged and sentenced Jesus…one who is BLAMELESS! So I am not saying to come out in favor of the sin….but love those who do.

  2. America is in a war between good and evil and this is the product of God’s curse in Genesis 3.15: “And I will put enmity between you (serpent) and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” Two seeds are locked in a battle over their community. This battle has been continuous throughout history. It always involved the use or misuse of civil authority. When the seed of the serpent ( the morally insensible) gain control of civil government, it turns the law and thus the police power of the state against the law abiding and virtuous, but when the seed of the woman (morally sensible) gain control of civil authority, the police power of the state is used to punished evil doers. The seed of the serpent is always working to overcome the seed of the woman. The seed of the serpent is a master at psychological warfare. For example, the evil seed complained of injustice when creationism was taught in public schools and evolution was not even though creationism supports a major principle of America’s Declaration of 1776 that “all men are created..” and not evolved. However, buying into the evolutionary fable, the American public educational system now teaches American children that their social compact, the Declaration of Independence, is based a a lie of “all men are created” because they are evolved from a rat or some other inferior creature. This one example is followed by host of others. In America, the evil seed has labored at over coming the seed of the woman and have gained control of the nation’s public institutions including civil government and now America’s Christian heritage is being sweep away by usurpation and corruption. We need to ask, how does the morally sensible overcome the morally insensible. The answer is the seed of the women must use the same tools that are being used in dismantling America in order to rebuild it,that is, the Constitution and legislative law. By uniting as one, they can retake the hill called civil authority. For the good seed the first order of business is to replace judicial interpretation of the US Constitution with an interpretation according to the will of the American people, otherwise known as original intent. They need an electoral process that discriminate between the morally sensible and insensible by setting in stone a national standard based on the commandments of God. They need to sideline the Oath of Diversity with the Oath of Allegiance to “one nation under God”. See Article VIII to the US Constitution at chcafe.wordpress.com restoring the wisdom of God into the American fabric.

  3. Vic Christian

I hear what both of you and the author are saying. However, in the vast majority of churches I have attended and in the email on this subject – Christians are not hating the homosexuals, Rather they are usually going to extremes in showing their love or acceptance. Rather it is the world, including the homosexuals, that are spewing their hatred.
