Here’s a short piece of this CNN article:
Craig Ferguson, host of CBS’ “The Late Late Show,” said that after seeing photos of Spears’ shaved head, he reconsidered making jokes at the expense of the “vulnerable.”
“For me, comedy should have a certain amount of joy in it,” he told viewers Monday.
“It should be about attacking the powerful — the politicians, the Trumps, the blowhards — going after them. We shouldn’t be attacking the vulnerable.”
This article really smacked me upside the head when I read it. Comedians like Craig show grace to celebrities when they can’t take it any longer. Those that have it all together are at his mercy.
Who is at our mercy? Is it a person that we believe is uglier than us, one who we believe has what we need, or maybe someone we’re afraid of? I can think Craig is being rude all I want, but if I look in the mirror I see nothing better. I see someone who claims to be a Christian, yet insults others – even if it is done quietly and “innocently”.
Comedians wouldn’t earn a paycheck if they weren’t insulting those that we admire in this world, would they? I don’t think I’d be doing much more insulting if I were getting paid. That’s how real sin is inside of the Christian’s life. Until I am showing love to the least of these, I have no room to look down on a comedian’s mentality.
The answer is in asking how God views Britney Spears……..a few days ago – before she went off the deep end. Christ wouldn’t have blasted her even when she was flying high, dancing and earning her millions. His view of the world is so powerful. Each is on the same playing field, whether already off the deep end or not. That’s the mindset I strive to follow. It wouldn’t be worth so much if it didn’t cost me so much pride!
