Also love this. I suffer from looking at Apple’s new products and think “ay, one of those would be nice” (specifically a new iPod Touch / iPhone, or one of them metal macbooks).

The problm I find with technology, they’re updated every 2 seconds, yet just because a product is superseeded doesn’t mean it instantly becomes useless. Instead of looking at what is avaliable and thinking “this is better than what I’ve got because of 1, 2, & 3″, look at what you’ve got and ask “Is there anything wrong with this, does it do what I need?” The answer will be very different, and generally you’ll be more content with what you own!

God embedded this in Africa….all the want is a beat up bike to ” actually get somewhere” we have one to ride around the block, and then it sits for how long ? What WE DO HAVE = our SALVATION….that to me is the “dot” of contentment….strip it all away….but never my salvation.

Thank you for sharing this. I struggle greatly with this and always think someone else is judging me for not having the latest and greatest thing. It’s silly and completely takes away from Christ and the BIG picture!
Been thinking about this very thing for the past two weeks and it’s been part of the topic at my home Bible Study. Here is a verse that has been ringing in my head through out this study.
Psalm 119:35-37 (NKJV)
“Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way.”

To one up this, let’s not forget that many people live beyond their means to have the next best thing. Then becoming slave to the lender.

I lived beyond my means for most of my life and it ruined me financially. Now after several years of financial accountablity from a brother at my church, I am debt free. Now I feel free to do what God had intended for me by not being slave to creditors. Now things like missions and giving are more easily in view.

I’m still working on being content with what God has provided.

I constantly struggle with this. It’s a form of lust for me and Jealousy is also a big factor. I’m probably breaking some more of the ten commandments with it as well.

I deal with it by setting myself a budget for new technology. That budget is currently $0. Nothing, nil, zip, nada.

You know what? It doesn’t actually hurt me at all!

Every few years we buy a new PC or laptop – when the need arises and every couple of years I get a new phone, but only one that’s free. I just have to learn to be patient. I currently have a Palm Centro, which does everything I want, including having a touch screen, and was $0 from walmart!

I remember hearing someone say recently that when we are considering new technologies, we only consider its worth by what it can do “for” us and never give a 2nd thought as to what it will do “to” us.
