Goodbye to two good things

Multitasking often leads to inefficiency. I’ve never really thought of it this way, but when technology cranks up the pace our life often gets so sucked into it that we don’t realize how much hurt is taking place. Like a computer, sometimes our lives don’t feel like they’re put to good use unless they’re running 5-6 applications at one time. Not realizing that we’ve slowed down and lost focus.

Do you have one thing in your life that you know God has placed in your path? If you were sitting at a buffet and only had to choose one of the foods at the bar, it’s the one you would take. Those other foods might also be good, but there’s just one that you enjoy most.

After some thought and prayer, I believe it’s time to part ways with two things that have occupied some (not too much) of my time these past few years. Why? Because the one thing God has made clear that I need to put my free time (for now) toward is focusing on Digital Disciples here in Columbus and helping the other cities consistently as they are getting started / continue meeting.

The first thing that I’m leaving behind is shooting 1 Photo Per Day. At the core I am a web / graphic designer, but I’ve challenged myself to practice more with photography by shooting a picture each day since January 1, 2010. I completed the 365 photos in 2010, and even kept it going in 2011 up until April 3rd. I’m not ditching photography, but I think the challenge has seen its last day.

The second would be (it actually ended a year ago anyway) the God’s Mac Podcast. My friend Lee Love and I recorded 56 episodes (interviews and discussion) for this podcast over the course of 3 1/2 years. We’ll still leave those up on the site for a while, but people continue to ask me if we’re going to get back to it. I’ve been tempted to, since it was such a good thing, but it just can’t happen.

I’ll share more in the next few days about what is going on with the Digital Disciples network, but I’d be thrilled if you could pray for that – and give all of the glory to God for all of these photos and podcasts that are out there. Hopefully many saw the great world God created through the photos, and heard the great work He is doing through people’s lives in the podcast. Have a great weekend!

God’s Mac Podcast resurrected

godsmacSome of you might not be aware that God’s Mac is actually a podcast. I’ve enjoyed each of the 54 episodes since August of 2006. But lately it’s become more and more obvious that things need to change. I’m going to talk it over with my two co-hosts (Lee Love and Kary Oberbrunner), but I think they’ll dig it! I would love to know your thoughts in response to the idea below!!!

Right now our subscribers receive maybe one episode each month, and (although we do receive feedback / email) the communication has been one way. Mainly because I haven’t put much effort into the website. That’s all about to change. Instead of a monthly episode that runs at least one hour long, we’re going to go with lots of short episodes (interviewing more people – more often). I’ll bring both Lee and Kary in for unique episodes here and there, but they won’t need to be a part of every episode. And the website – we’ll be converting from Joomla over to WordPress. Allowing comments / feedback for each episode and providing actual blog material instead of episodes only.

I’ll be giving it more thought the next day or two for sure. My only intent with the adjustment is to better serve our online community, and provide new listeners with something they can look forward to frequently. Again, if you have any thoughts please share!

PRAYING that we can be more of an encouragement. PRAISING God for the past three years and experience gained!

Great fun with Rhett and Link

rhettlinkLast night Rhett and Link (internetainers – see their site here and watch live on the web every Thursday at 9pm EST) were in Ohio for a live concert, so I drove two hours to enjoy the show! They drew a crowd of around 60 and really put on a good show. Thanks to Steve and Brian for hosting these guys and all of us! They won one of R&L’s contests and the prize was a free concert at your home base. R&L were pretty glad the winners didn’t live too far across the globe from North Carolina. You can see a few more photos I shot of the evening over here. If you want to check it out, you can listen to an interview I did with the guys back in April of 2008 on the God’s Mac Podcast here.

rhettlinkgabeIt really is pretty amazing that these guys were headed into a career in engineering, but are now full time with their talents on the web. Last night showed that they’re really connected with their fan base. And the fan base is pretty diverse in age, a result of their show, music videos and songs being clean and enjoyable. You’ll definitely want to check out all of their media that is available on their site, and watch for the new stuff that shows up frequently. You’re guaranteed to laugh, and I’m guessing you’ll even enjoy their Thursday live shows just as much. Thanks to R&L for making the flight up here, and for the enjoyable Thursday evening!

PRAYING that God provides great opportunities for R&L in the future. PRAISING God for allowing us all to use our unique talents!

Interview with Michael Hyatt

michaelhyatt1We’ve been going strong (most of the time) since August of 2006 with the podcast over at GodsMac.com. The people, including our guests, those that co-host it with me, and our listening community, have all made it what it is. And this week is no different. It was my pleasure to chat with Michael Hyatt, CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers, for maybe 20 minutes. We had a great time chatting about blogging, social media (Twitter), and some really interesting things their organization is doing to lead publishing in the digital age.

At the moment Michael is in Ethiopia with WorldVision, along with his wife, Max Lucado and a few others. He’s definitely an example for other executives with how open he is with sharing his thoughts. During the interview it was powerful to hear him talk about culture no longer being interested in the large corporations, but in hearing from the leaders and people individually.

I’ve included the entire podcast in the audio player below. My friend Lee and I discuss technology, with Michael’s interview starting at the 30:20 mark and the discussion about free will and predestination with Kary Oberbrunner starting at the 50:40 mark.

PRAYING for Michael and the others, as they are in Ethiopia with WorldVision. PRAISING God for the opportunity to have a podcast, allowing people to share from their heart and make a difference.

Sunday Selebrity #2 – DJ Wade-O

I’m excited to share a new Sunday Selebrity with you today, hopefully an individual some of you will enjoy hearing from for some time to come.

djwadeoDJ Wade-O (and wife) live in Newark, NJ…although it’s good to see him wearing the OH gear! God is using this man in a mighty way. There are only a few podcasters that I would recommend other people following, and that’s why he’s the first I’m pointing the spotlight to. This man of God recognizes that he has the opportunity to reach the world. Not because he is someone special on his own, but by connecting with hip hop, R&B and rap artists as they are also glorifying God through their talents. He connects with these people and they share life together, hearing how God is doing mighty things through each of them.

selebritysundayPodcasting is not an easy thing to do (as I’ve found out over three years), but DJ puts lots of time and effort into producing a product that does nothing short of glorifying God. I’m so thankful to see other men realizing that they can take a stand for God like this, and even more excited to see his wife (like mine) stand so close to him and be supportive of what he is doing. DJ is the inside scoop in this niche of the music industry, and I am sure he has a bright future as he continues to get better at what he does. Be sure to check his site / podcast out online through www.wadeoradio.com, on Twitter and on Facebook!

PRAYING for my friend Brian as he joins our church’s staff officially tomorrow! PRAISING God for working through individuals like DJ Wade-O, who are out there putting time and effort into glorifying God.
